When we go out & I can’t decide which cocktail to order, I’d say a Cosmopolitan is the drink I order most often. Call me boring or a non-purist, but I am not a straight vodka martini kind of gal. I usually need something fruity going on I guess. And when I’m just hanging out on the lake on a beautiful summer day, this drink cannot be beat. Nice and tart and refreshing.
You may know that the drink gained popularity in the late-90’s during the days of the HBO series “Sex in the City.” It was Carrie Bradshaw’s drink of choice. Well, I have little else in common with Carrie or SJP but I do like a good Cosmo. There are an endless amount of recipes out there for the proper Cosmopolitan. All call for vodka (or citron vodka,) triple sec or Cointreau, fresh lime juice or Rose’s lime juice, and cranberry juice. And all seem to be in varying proportions. I started with a recipe that used more lime & cranberry juice. For my taste, I found it to be too tart. Now in all fairness, it may be because I was using an all-natural highly concentrated cranberry juice with no sugar added. I’m almost certain using Ocean Spray cranberry or something similar would make it sweeter. After some required experimenting, I settled on using the proportions below which are closer to the ones listed in Mr Boston’s All-New Official Bartender’s and Party Guide.
If you are in the camp that likes your cosmos pinker, then use just a splash of cranberry juice.
Recipe adapted from Mr Boston: All-New Official Bartender’s and Party Guide
- 2 oz vodka
- 1/2 oz Cointreau
- 1/2 oz freshly squeezed lime juice
- 1/2 oz cranberry juice (i used unsweetened, but if you prefer sweeter drinks choose a cranberry juice that is sweetened, or add 1/2 oz simple syrup)
- 2 drops Young Living Lemon Essential Oil
- 1 drop Young Living Orange Essential Oil
- ice, enough to fill cocktail shaker
- Orange or Lime slice for garnish
Put all ingredients in a cocktail shaker. Shake well and strain into a chilled martini glass. Garnish with an orange or lime slice.
*If you like your Cosmos pink, use just a splash of cranberry juice. Also, the brand I used was highly concentrated. Using Ocean Spray or a similar brand may give you a lighter hue. In any case, I hope you enjoy it!
